Affordable art: Framing magazine pages

Posted on 9:05 AM by Unknown
When I first moved to New York, more than ten years ago, I fell in love with a New Yorker magazine cover that arrived in my mailbox. The illustration showed a young couple kissing on a busy street. I felt like it captured my twenties—or, at least, how I wanted my twenties to be:) I contacted the artist to see if I could buy the print, but needless to say, it was out of my budget.

That following Christmas, I was visiting my family in Michigan, and my mom brought out a gift for me. She had framed the cover of the magazine, along with a lovely pink mat to complement the illustration. How sweet is that? To date, it's one of my favorite gifts I've ever gotten, and it has hung in every apartment I've had since.
Then, recently, I spotted this beautiful Beatles photograph at my friend Elizabeth's house. When I asked where she'd found it, she revealed that it was actually from an article in The New Yorker! She had simply clipped it out and framed it. On her bookcase, doesn't the photo look like fine art?

Anyway, I love the idea of finding gorgeous art in magazines and making it your own. The only real cost is the frame!

Watercolor nail polish

Posted on 7:13 AM by Unknown
One of my New Year's resolutions was to stop biting my nails like a five-year-old. I already bought this crazy stuff (which makes your nails taste bitter). But after stumbling upon these beautiful watercolor nails, I feel even more inspired. And they're surprisingly easy: the tutorial just calls for a few pastel colors and a sponge. Will you try them this spring?

P.S. Navy nails and galaxy nails.

The new baby

Posted on 10:30 AM by Unknown
Last week, we went to get a sonogram for the new baby. Seeing its little profile made me teary. Lying there in the hospital room, I couldn't stop repeating, "What a sweetheart, what a dollface." I also noticed that the baby's sticky-out top lip looks exactly like my grandfather's, which made my heart swell.

About halfway through, the doctor said she was going to look at the legs and write the gender on the screen, so—since we're waiting to find out—she told me to close my eyes. Lying there, I tried to count how many times she punched the computer keys, but of course I couldn't tell a thing. (Do you think the profile looks like a boy or a girl?:)
(My grandfather with his signature lip)

We love you so much already, little one! We can't wait for you to join our family.

P.S. Toby's sonogram looked like a Dr. Seuss character...

Car pillows

Posted on 8:30 AM by Unknown
I know one cheeky little boy who would love this pillow. Made in Paris, the pillow has a music box inside that will play your choice of "Blowin 'in the Wind" by Bob Dylan, "Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" or (get this!) "Light my Fire" by The Doors. I think the word rad might be appropriate here.

Have a great weekend.

Posted on 10:00 AM by Unknown
What are you up to this weekend? Thanks for a really fun travel week! I loved all your thoughts and comments. This weekend, Alex's best friend is visiting from Rome, so we'll be catching up (crazily enough, I barely know him!), and we're also going to take Toby to the Dumbo carousel. Hope you have a great weekend, and here are a few fun links from around the web...

Jennifer Lawrence cracks me up.

Who else is tired of winter?

Celebrities, ranked from most to least charming.

Homemade Girl Scout cookies.

A documentary about The Shining...are you brave enough?

How to plan a vacation that you'll actually enjoy.

Would you want to go to Mars with your partner? (This claustrophobe politely declines.)

Bedroom with a black wall.

Mom dancing! I love Michelle Obama.

Deciding between these and these sunglasses...advice?

A travel Ergo that folds into a pouch.

Cliff diving.

Models and their mothers.

What 200 calories looks like.

Plus, three more travel posts:
* Plane picnics.
* What English sounds like to foreigners.
* United States pillows.

Have a good one! xoxo

Bright luggage

Posted on 8:03 AM by Unknown
We've always used boring black suitcases without even thinking about it, but these colorful numbers are quickly changing my mind. My friend Yolanda recently spotted Crewcuts designer Jenny Cooper and her family with them at the airport. The cheery bags—by Japanese brand Hideo Wakamatsu–would kick off vacations in a fun way and make you smile while you're living out of them in a hotel room. Aren't they awesome?

P.S. A luggage scooter!
